Life happens. A repair bill lands, hours get cut, a card expires and a payment quietly bounces. If that has just happened to you, take a breath β you are not in trouble, and you are not the first.
β
But we owe you honesty: from the day a payment is missed, a clock starts ticking. What you do in the next few days decides whether this becomes a blip you will soon forget β or a mark that follows you around for the next six years. Here is what really happens, and the two things you can do about it today.
β
The Six-Year Shadow
β
Finance providers report to the UK credit reference agencies β Experian, Equifax and TransUnion β every month. Catch up quickly and the damage can be minimal. Leave it, and the missed payment becomes a marker on your credit file.
β
That marker does not fade once you are back on track. It stays visible for six years, to every lender and credit provider that ever checks your file. If you want the full picture of how these markers work, our guide on how car finance affects your credit score explains it step by step.
β
And it escalates. Keep missing payments and the account can be registered as a default β one of the heaviest marks a credit file can carry, usually applied after three to six months of arrears. Stay silent after that, and things can end in court action and a county court judgment (CCJ), which sits on a public register for six years β even after you have paid it.
β
Where It Really Bites
β
This is the part most people do not see coming. A missed payment does not stay inside your finance agreement. It quietly reaches into the rest of your life:
β
- Renting a home. Letting agents run credit checks on almost every applicant, and defaults and CCJs show up. That can mean being asked for a guarantor, six months of rent upfront β or a polite "the landlord has chosen another applicant" for the flat you had already pictured yourself living in.
- Buying a home. Mortgage lenders look back across the full six years. Recent missed payments can mean a bigger deposit, a worse rate, or a flat decline β long after you have forgotten the month it all went wrong.
- Everyday life. Phone contracts, paying insurance monthly, switching energy supplier, even some jobs β especially in finance and security β all involve credit checks.
- Your car. If arrears keep building, we can eventually be left with no choice but to end the agreement and recover the vehicle. It is genuinely the last thing we want β nobody at Ayan wins when a customer loses the car they do the school run in. And losing the car does not automatically clear what is owed.
Put simply: the you of six years from now might be applying for a flat, a mortgage or a better job. What lands on your credit file this month is what they will be judged on.
β
The Most Expensive Thing You Can Do Is Nothing
β
The debt charity StepChange has found that more than half of its clients waited over a year before getting help with their debts β and 92% wished they had acted sooner. That year of silence is where most of the damage happens.
β
To a lender, silence looks like refusal. A payment β or even a conversation β looks like intent. Six years from now, the difference between those two is enormous.
β
If You Can Pay β Do It Today
β
Use the payment link in the message we sent you, or make the payment in the app. It takes about two minutes, and acting quickly gives you the best chance of keeping this off your credit file altogether.
β
If You Cannot Pay Right Now β Talk to Us Today Instead
β
That is not a trick. We would far rather hear "I cannot manage this month" than hear nothing. A real person will look at your situation with you, and there are always more options available early than late.
β
And if money is tight everywhere, not just here, free and confidential help exists β and speaking to them never affects your credit file:
β
- MoneyHelper β free, government-backed money guidance
- StepChange β the UK's leading debt charity
- National Debtline β free debt advice by phone or online
- Citizens Advice β help with money, housing and more
One Payment Keeps Every Door Open
β
A missed payment is not a moral failing, and it does not have to become a six-year problem. Caught early, it is just a bad week.
β
So do the one thing your future self will thank you for: make the payment today if you can β and talk to us today if you cannot. Either way, you will have kept every door open. Six years of doors.
β
And once you are back on track, your credit file can recover too β our guide to rebuilding your credit score shows where to start.
