Planning to drop someone off or pick them up from Edinburgh Airport? Before you head to the terminal, it's worth knowing exactly what to expect - because pulling up without a plan can cost you more than you'd think. Edinburgh Airport charges for drop-off and pick-up, and the fees can add up quickly if you overstay your welcome.

In this guide, we've broken down the current drop-off and pick-up fees, where to go, who qualifies for a discount, and a few tips to keep things smooth on the day.

What Are the Drop-Off and Pick-Up Fees at Edinburgh Airport?

Edinburgh Airport operates a charged drop-off and pick-up zone located on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, directly outside the terminal building. It's a barrier-controlled zone, so you'll need to pay before exiting.

The current pricing structure is straightforward: the first 10 minutes costs £6 as a flat fee. After that, you'll be charged £1 per minute for every additional minute you stay. So if you're picking someone up whose flight has just landed and it takes 20 minutes to get through baggage claim, you could easily be looking at £16 or more. It's worth timing your arrival carefully and using the live arrivals board to avoid waiting too long in the zone.

Up to 10 minutes : £6

10 minutes and above : £1 per minute

Where Is the Drop-Off and Pick-Up Zone?

The drop-off and pick-up zone is located on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, right outside the main terminal building. It's signposted from the main approach road and is accessible to cars, motorbikes, and minibuses.

To get there from the A8 (Glasgow Road), head along Eastfield Road following signs for Edinburgh Airport. At the roundabout near the Moxy and DoubleTree by Hilton hotels, take the second exit straight ahead, then take the first exit at the next roundabout. Follow the road past the EDI control tower and you'll see the drop-off and pick-up zone ahead of you. It's fairly straightforward once you're following the airport signage, but building in a few extra minutes is always a good idea, especially during busy periods.

Who Qualifies for a Discount?

Edinburgh Airport offers a 50% discount for the first 10 minutes of the charged drop-off zone for two groups: local residents and electric vehicle drivers. For residents, this applies to those living within specific postcode districts, including EH4 6, EH4 8, EH12 0, EH12 9, EH28, EH29, and EH52 5. You'll need to apply for the discount in advance via the airport's support page as it doesn't apply automatically at the barrier.

Electric vehicle drivers also qualify for the same 50% discount on the first 10 minutes, but rather than pre-registering, EV drivers simply press the intercom button at the barrier to have it validated. Blue badge holders get an even better deal, vehicles carrying passengers with blue badges receive one full hour free of charge across Edinburgh Airport's car parks. Blue badge drivers should use the scanner on the ground floor of the multi-storey, or visit the customer services office in the same building.

How to Pay

As of 1 July 2025, Edinburgh Airport's car parks are fully cashless. This means you can no longer pay with coins or notes at the pay stations - payment is accepted by credit or debit card, contactless, Apple Pay, and Google Pay only.

You can pay at the pay stations before returning to your car, or alternatively at the terminals located at the exit barriers. If you have any issues, there's an intercom at each exit where airport staff can assist you. It's worth having your card or phone payment method ready before you get back in the car - fumbling around at the barrier with a queue behind you is never ideal.

Tips to Avoid Extra Charges

The biggest tip is not to arrive too early. Use Edinburgh Airport's live flight arrivals tracker before you set off, so you have a realistic idea of when your passenger will actually be walking out of arrivals. Sitting in the drop-off zone for 20 minutes waiting for someone who's stuck at baggage reclaim is an easy way to rack up an unnecessary bill.

If the flight is delayed or you think the wait will be longer than 10 minutes, it's often worth waiting in one of the airport's longer-stay car parks nearby, or even pulling over somewhere on the approach road until your passenger is ready and heading out. A quick phone call or text when they're through security and heading to arrivals gives you the perfect window to pull into the zone, keep it under 10 minutes, and pay just the flat £6 fee.

Conclusion

Edinburgh Airport's drop-off and pick-up zone is simple enough to use once you know what to expect - £6 for the first 10 minutes, then £1 per minute after that. Whether you're dropping someone off for an early morning flight or collecting a family member arriving from abroad, a bit of timing and planning can make the whole thing quick, easy, and cost-effective.

Prices and policies are based on information available in July 2025 and may be subject to change. Always check the official Edinburgh website before travelling.
